When designing our home, we knew we wanted tall and vaulted ceilings to create an open living area. Our ceiling starts at 10 ft tall and then continues at a vaulted angle. We also wanted to design the space with lots of natural light and windows. That meant definitely no window coverings! We live out in the country surrounded by farms so privacy is not an issue. We had our builder frame out the windows and doors for a finished look. Our paint colors are Sherwin Williams Repose Gray and Extra White for trim. Our flooring is Pergo Smoked Chestnut – which I highly recommend if you have big, clumsy dogs like we do!
I am often asked about our beams, and I’m going to let you in on a biiiiig secret! They are completely fake. Yes as faux as all get out, not even framed beams, but styrofoam! How crazy is that?! When we were looking at the beam budget and deciding between real and faux, we quickly realized even the shipping prices of faux beams could quickly surpass the budget of real beams. So, we dug deep and my hubby found these from azfauxbeams. I am not joking when I say that you can’t even tell – they even have etching and grooves!
Of course no modern farmhouse is complete without shiplap. We decided to add some to the fireplace accent wall. We had found some knotty pine tongue and groove boards up at my husband’s grandpa’s land and were able to incorporate them into our home. The imperfections you see give it character and we were totally ok with that! Our builtins were custom built and I had our trim carpenter add a farmhouse “x” to each door to keep the farmhouse feel.
I knew that farmhouse white couches wouldn’t work in our house with a baby and 2 dogs, so I went on the hunt for some leather couches that would blend with my modern farmhouse vision. I didn’t know if two leather couches were in our budget, but I found these and I couldn’t believe how affordable they were! I love how they look in our space and so far have held up great. My husband requested reclining accent chairs, which again proved a challenge as I knew I didn’t want two bulky recliners. But I was able to find these which completed the whole look of the room.
For our coffee and end table I was looking for furniture pieces with a farmhouse “x” to match the builtins. I stumbled upon this coffee table and this end table to match. They come completely unfinished, so that you can finish it to fit into your space! We chose to stain it to match the mantle and then I chalk painted below. They are very sturdy and we’ve been happy with our purchase!
Our big chandelier sure makes my heart sing! I was scouring the internet for one that was large enough yet affordable to make a big statement. I scored it here on major sale! I think the hubby and I are going to have to flip a coin on who has to change the bulbs!
For a rug for this space I wanted to go with some deep blue tones for warmth but yet still neutral enough to keep the space light and bright! I found this one in blue online and it was even prettier in person!
